13-14's win first, lose next two in State pool play
08.06.06 - Pierre Post 8's 13-14 Teeners defeated Black Hills American Friday afternoon in its State Tournament opener 17-1, but it was downhill from there, as the squad ended its season with a 1-2 record in pool play this weekend in Sioux Falls.
All games Saturday were rained out, so pool play finished on Sunday, with Pierre falling 12-5 to Huron and 6-3 to Aberdeen.
Scott Cichos struck out six in four innings Friday and had three hits in leading Post 8 over Black Hills American. Tanner Schaefer and Ryan Yackley also went 3-for-4 in the victory.
Sunday, Huron outplayed Post 8 to claim a 12-5 win. Nolan Merrill, Yackley and Jacob Miller threw the contest, as Post 8 managed just two hits - singles by Adam O'Day and John Burchill.
Pierre plated three runs in the third to take a 3-0 lead against Aberdeen, but the Smittys would rally Sunday afternoon for a 6-3 win to eliminate Post 8 from state title contention.
O'Day had two hits, and Ryan Lauseng and Yackley each doubled home a run. Cichos was the losing pitcher.
The 13-14 Teeners end their season with a 26-16 record.

Tough draw awaits 13-14 Teeners in State
07.27.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners will be paired with three teams they are a combined 4-8 against in this year's State 13-14 AA Majors Tournament.
The tournament, which runs August 4-6 at Sioux Falls' Harmondon Complex, will feature 12 teams in three four-team pools.
Following pool play on Friday and Saturday, the champion from each pool and a wildcard team advance to the semifinals Sunday, with the winners qualifying for the state championship game.
Pierre is in the white pool, joined by Black Hills American, Huron PB Sports and the Aberdeen Smittys.
Post 8 dropped all four games it played this year to Huron, while going 1-2 against the Americans and 3-2 versus Aberdeen.
Pierre will play the first game of the tournament, on Friday, August 4 at 12:30 p.m. against Black Hills American. Post 8 will then play a doubleheader Saturday, against Huron at 12:30 p.m. and Aberdeen at 3 p.m.
The red pool features Yankton, Sioux Falls West, Brookings and Black Hills National. Mitchell, Watertown, Sioux Falls East and Brandon Valley comprise the blue pool.

13-14's trade games again in Rapid City
07.21.06 - The teams were flipped, but the results the same - a loss in the opener and a win in the finale of a doubleheader against Black Hills teams for the Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners.
Post 8 dropped a 6-5, eight-inning affair to the Nationals, but bounced back for an 11-6 victory over the Americans.
Post 8 pitchers gave the Nationals 11 walks and hit two batters, but the defense kept them in the game.
Nolan Merrill had three hits, and Jake Miller and Ryan Yackley each had two singles.
Merrill then led the way against the Americans, hurling a complete game, striking out two. He did walk four and hit three more, but pitched around the jams to earn the win.
Miller, Yackley and Scott Cichos each had two hits in the victory.
Pierre is 21-14 on the season. The squad will have four tune-up games this weekend with the Pierre Tracers 13-year olds before playing August 4-6 at the State Majors Tournament in Sioux Falls.

13-14 Teeners split with Black Hills teams
07.21.06 - Pierre Post 8's 13-14 Teeners traded games with the Black Hills Pony All-Star teams Friday night, falling 9-1 to Black Hills American before defeating Black Hills National 7-5 in eight innings at McKeague Field.
Post 8 managed just five hits in the opener, including a double by Scott Cichos, in the 9-1 loss to the Americans. Ryan Lauseng was the hard-luck losing pitcher, throwing well for his 4.2 innings.
Cichos one-upped Lauseng in the nightcap, tossing all eight frames and holding the Nationals to three earned runs.
Pierre led 5-1 before the Nationals tied the game in the fifth, and it remained knotted at five until a two-run eighth for Post 8.
Lauseng drove in the winning run in the eighth with a double. Joseph Wiesler drove in a pair of runs for Pierre.
Post 8, 20-13, will play each Black Hills squad again Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. CDT at McKeague Field.

13-14's go 2-2 in inaugural Kirley Tournament
07.16.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners came up two runs short of winning the first annual Joe Kirley Memorial Tournament, going 2-2 and finishing tied for second in the five team event this weekend at Hyde Stadium.
Pierre split its two games each day. Saturday, Post 8 dropped a 12-2 decision to Black Hills American, then rallied to defeat Watertown 6-4.
In Sunday action, Post 8 defeated Aberdeen 6-5 before losing to Black Hills National 7-5.
Post 8 struggled in the tournament opener against Black Hills American, tallying just three hits in losing 12-2 in five innings. Tanner Schaefer was the losing pitcher.
Against Watertown, Pierre led the entire way, holding off a scrappy Black Sox team for a 6-4 win. Ryan Yackley tossed six innings, striking out five in earning the win. Ryan Lauseng threw the seventh for the save. Jacob Miller went 3-for-3, Yackley tripled and doubled, and Schaefer added two hits in the victory.
Scott Cichos threw four innings of one-run relief, and Post 8 gunned down two Aberdeen runners at the plate in the seventh inning Sunday, winning 6-5. Schaefer had three hits, while Nolan Merrill and Garrett Weber each had two.
In the tournament finale, with the championship on the line, Pierre didn't quite have enough to overcome Black Hills National, losing the title tilt 7-5.
Merrill was the losing pitcher, lasting 4.2 innings. The game was tied at five before the Nationals plated the deciding runs in the top of the fifth.
Merrill did have to hits at the plate, and John Breckenridge added an RBI double.
The Post 8 13-14's are 19-12 on the year, and have a pair of scheduling changes. First, their games with Aberdeen, scheduled for Tuesday in Pierre, have been postponed due to Aberdeen not having enough guys.
Also, the 13-14's trip to Rapid City to play the Black Hills squad will now be an overnight stay, with Post 8 playing each team twice. Game times are 6:30 p.m. CDT Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday at McKeague Field in Rapid City.

13-14 Teeners split in Mitchell
07.12.06 - Pierre Post 8's 13-14 Teeners dominated Mitchell Black in game one, but could only muster a split of a doubleheader at Drake Field in Mitchell Wednesday.
Post 8 won 9-1 in the opener, but Mitchell rallied for a 4-3 victory in the finale.
Scott Cichos struck out five while hurling all seven innings in the opener. He also had two hits for Pierre.
Post 8 had plenty of chances in game two, but stranded nine runners on base - seven in scoring position - and allowed three unearned runs in the 4-3 loss.
Ryan Lauseng threw five strong innings, but was saddled with the loss.
Jacob Miller, John Breckenridge and Cichos each had two hits for Pierre.
The 13-14's are 17-10 this season. The squad hosts the first annual Joe Kirley Memorial Tournament Saturday and Sunday at Hyde.

13-14's fall twice to Huron
07.06.06 - Huron PB Sports used the ten-run rule in game one, then fought off a seventh-inning comeback in game two, sweeping the Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners Thursday night at Memorial Park in Huron.
Huron took the opener in five innings,11-1, then won 8-7 in game two.
Pierre managed just two hits in game one, singles by Tanner Schaefer and John Breckenridge, in a losing effort.
Scott Cichos threw four innings on the mound and was the losing pitcher.
Post 8 trailed in game two 7-4 entering the seventh, but rallied for three to tie the contest. Huron would rally, thanks to a throwing error, to score the winning run in the bottom of the frame.
Adam O'Day led the way offensively with a two-hit day, including an RBI.
Ryan Lauseng threw six-plus strong innings for Post 8 despite getting the loss.
The 13-14 Teeners drop to 12-9 on the year. They will be in Aberdeen this weekend for a four-game tournament at Fossum Field.

13-14 Teeners steamroll Mitchell
06.28.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners needed just seven innings to increase their winning streak to seven, sweeping the Mitchell 13's 10-0 and 23-5 Wednesday at Hyde Stadium.
In game one, Ryan Yackley threw all four innings, holding Mitchell to one hit, as Pierre scored five in the first and cruised.
Garrett Weber sparked Post 8 in game two with a three-run double as Pierre needed just three innings for a 23-5 win.
The 13-14's, who improved to 12-7 with the sweep, will have a week-long layoff before traveling to Huron next Thursday for a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Memorial Park.

13-14's leave Brookings with sweep
06.27.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners upped their win streak to five in a row, sweeping the Brookings Bombers 10-0 and 15-10 Wednesday afternoon at Mickelson Middle School Field in Brookings.
Post 8 shutout the Bombers 10-0 in game one, then won game two 15-10 when the game was called due to darkness in the sixth.
Scott Cichos hurled a complete game two-hitter, walking two in shutting out Brookings in the opener.
Ryan Lauseng went 4-for-4, while Cichos and Tanner Schaefer each added three hits.
Five players had two hits apiece in Pierre's 15-10 victory in the nightcap.
Joseph Wieseler doubled twice, while Jake Miller, Nolan Merrill, Ryan Yackley and Cichos all added a pair of hits.
Lauseng started the contest on the mound, with Adam Deneke going the last three innings to earn the win in relief.
The 13-14 Teeners improved to 10-7 on the season. They host Mitchell Wednesday for a 3 p.m. twinbill at Hyde Stadium.

13-14's dominate Watertown
06.22.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners put up 26 runs in sweeping the Watertown Black Sox Thursday afternoon at Watertown Stadium.
Post 8 took game one 10-3, then needed just five innings to dispatch of the hosts 16-3.
Ryan Lauseng went the distance in the opener for Pierre, allowing just five hits while striking out four.
John Breckenridge went 3-for-4, while Tanner Schaefer and Adam O'Day each added a pair of hits for Post 8.
Eight of the nine Pierre batters had multiple hits in game two as Pierre took a 16-3, five-inning win.
Joseph Wieseler had three hits, while Adam Deneke, Scott Cichos, Nolan Merrill, Adam O'Day, Jacob Miller, Garrett Weber and Kris Hewlett all had two.
Weber, Hewlett and Schaefer combined to hold Watertown to five hits and three runs in five innings, with Hewlett earning the win.
The 13-14 Teeners, back over the hump at 8-7, travel to Brookings Tuesday for a 4 p.m. twinbill at Mickelson Middle School Field.

13-14's beat host team at Watertown Tourney, finish second
06.18.06 - The Post 8 13-14 Teeners upended Watertown's Black Sox 6-3 Sunday afternoon, finishing in second place with a 2-1 mark in the Watertown Optimist's Club Tournament this past weekend.
Scott Cichos and Ryan Yackley teamed up on a five-hitter, with Cichos getting the win by throwing the first four, and Yackley earning the save for the final two innings.
Tanner Schaefer was 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs for Post 8.
The 13-14 Teeners, 6-7, will head back to Watertown Thursday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.

13-14 Teeners split two at Watertown Tourney
06.17.06 - Pierre Post 8's 13-14 Teeners pounded out 12 hits and 13 runs in defeating Brandon Valley, then managed just one hit against Aberdeen, splitting a pair of games at the Watertown Optimist's Club Tournament at Watertown's Foundation Fields.
Pierre needed just four innings to defeat Brandon Valley 13-1.
Jake Miller, who had three hits offensively, held Brandon to only one hit, getting the complete game victory.
Scott Cichos, Tanner Schaefer and Adam O'Day all added a pair of hits in the Post 8 attack.
In the Aberdeen contest, Pierre had just one hit - a Kris Hewlett RBI single - in a 4-1 loss.
Nolan Merrill threw all six innings, striking out seven while walking five in the loss.
Pierre will play Watertown in the final game of the tournament Sunday afternoon.

13-14's split pair with Brookings
06.14.06 - The Brookings Bombers scored six runs in the seventh inning of game to, rallying for a split with the Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners Wednesday night at Hyde Stadium.
Pierre took the opener 6-4, while Brookings won the nitecap 12-10.
Scott Cichos, Ryan Yackley and Adam Deneke teamed up to hold the Bombers to four runs and six hits in the opener. Cichos and Yackley, who was the winning pitcher, each hurled two innings. Deneke earned the save by throwing the final three frames.
Deneke and Nolan Merrill each had two hits at the plate for Post 8.
Game two saw Post 8 take an 8-6 lead into the seventh inning before things got crazy.
The Bombers plated six in the top of the frame, holding a 12-8 lead. Post 8 would score two and load the bases with no one out, but three groundballs kept Pierre off the board and from a sweep.
Deneke had two hits, including a triple, and Yackley and Cichos also added two hits. Tanner Schaefer was the losing pitcher.
The Post 8 13-14 Teeners are 4-6 on the young year. They will be in Watertown this weekend for a two-day tournament at Foundation Fields.

Huron sweeps 13-14 Teeners
06.08.06 - Huron PB Sports pounded out 31 hits, sweeping the Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners 17-7 and 14-8 at Hyde Stadium Thursday.
In game one, Huron led from the start, scoring nine runs in the first two innings. Post 8 cut the margin to 12-7, but Huron plated five in the seventh to put the game away. Ryan Yackley was the pitcher of record.
Game two saw a back-and-forth contest that was tied at seven when Huron put together a five-run fifth and held on for the victory.
Scott Cichos threw four strong inning for Post 8, getting a no decision. Adam O'Day threw one inning of relief, and was the losing pitcher.
The sweep drops Pierre to 2-4 on the year. The 13-14's are back in action Tuesday at Aberdeen for a noon doubleheader.

13-14's rally for split against Watertown
06.05.06 - Following a subpar opening game effort, the Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners showed their full potential in Monday's finale, splitting a doubleheader against the Watertown Black Sox, losing the opener 9-6 before winning game two 12-2 in six innings.
In game one, Post 8 took a 3-0 lead before Watertown plated five in the second and holding off Pierre the rest of the way.
Nolan Merrill threw two innings in a losing effort, with Jacob Miller and Jordan Drapeaux finishing out the contest on the mound.
Offensively, Ryan Yackley had a two-hit opener to led the Post 8 13-14's.
In the nitecap, Post 8 started early with six runs in the first, then added six more in the sixth to win via the mercy rule.
Ryan Lauseng was the winning pitcher, going four innings. He was perfect for 3 1/3 before a groundball bounced off his glove allowing a Black Sox base runner. Adam Deneke closed it out on the hill for Post 8.
Jacob Miller had two hits and drove in a pair of runs, and Adam O'Day also had two RBIs for Pierre.
The Post 8 13-14 Teeners, 2-2, will play host to Huron Thursday. Game time is 5 p.m. at Hyde Stadium.

13-14 Tourney to be named for Kirley
06.05.06 - The first annual Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teener Tournament will now be known as the Joe Kirley Memorial 13-14 Teener Tournament.
Kirley, a longtime Post 8 baseball board member and supporter, died last week. He spent thousands of hours supporting the Post 8 baseball program, and was Post 8 Legion Athletic Officer for over 20 years.
Two Rapid City teams, along with Watertown and Aberdeen, will join Post 8 for the first annual Joe Kirley Memorial 13-14 Teener Tournament July 15-16 at Hyde Stadium.

13-14 Teeners split opener with Mitchell
05.31.06 - The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners bounced back from a disappointing opener and a sluggish start in game two to take the nitecap 11-5, spltting the first two games of the year with Mitchell.
Mitchell took game one 5-2.
In the opener, Ryan Yackley tossed four innings, allowing four runs, three unearned, and was the losing pitcher. Scott Cichos allowed a run in three innings of relief for Post 8.
Adam Deneke led the offensive attack for Pierre, going 2-for-3 with a triple. Brandon Heckenlaible added a pair of hits for Pierre.
Mitchell put up three runs in the first inning of game two, before the Post 8 bats came to life in the third.
Pierre tied the game at 3-3, and with the bases loaded, Adam O'Day found the gap in left center for a three-run double, giving Post 8 the lead for good.
O'Day was one of four Pierre players with two hits, both of which were doubles. Joseph Wieseler, Nolan Merrill and Jordan Drapeaux also had a pair of basehits.
The 13-14's, 1-1, were scheduled to face Mitchell's other younger team Thursday. Due to a scheduling conflict in Mitchell, however, the games have been cancelled.
The squad's next action will be Monday, when they host Watertown.

13-14 Teeners have record 42 games
04.02.06 -- The Pierre Post 8 13-14 Teeners will have a busy summer in 2006, with a team-record 42 games on the schedule this season.
The 13-14 Teeners started 8-15 last year, but ended 17-22, coming up one game shy of the semifinals in the State AA 13-14 VFW Majors Tournament.
For the second straight year, the State 13-14 Tournaments will be played at the Harmondon Baseball Complex in Sioux Falls. Three four-team pools will be compiled, with the winners of each pool and one wildcard team advancing to the semifinals.
The Pierre 13-14 Teener Tournament, which was not held last season, is back this year with an impressive field. Defending state champion Aberdeen, Watertown, and both Black Hills Pony League squads from Rapid City will join Pierre for the tournament. The dates are July 15-16 at Hyde Stadium.
After its' overwhelming success last year, the battle of Pierre 13-14 teams returns as the Pierre 13-14 Teeners will play the Pierre 13's traveling squad in a four-game series July 29-30. A year ago the two teams split the series, with the 13's Tracers winning the State Minors Tournament.
James Berreth is in his second year as the head coach of the Pierre 13-14 Teeners. Berreth ran cross country and played baseball at Mount Marty University in Yankton last year. He is also a former player for Jim Iverson and the Post 8 Legion.
Bill Gayton is back for his second season as a special assistant working primarily with the 13-14 Teeners. He coached a year of B Teeners and two years at the A Teener level before becoming a special assistant. Gayton's son, Bill, Jr., is the director of scouting for Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres.
