2006 Season Capsule
26-34 under coach Tyler Merriam
(15-20 as A Teeners; 11-14 as Split Squad)
Third Place at State; Region 4AA Runners Up; Stephens Tournament
Champions
The Pierre Post 8 A Teeners survived some very bumpy roads
through the long summer to play their best baseball at the end - a 4-3
postseason record, with all three losses to the top two teams in the state -
en route to a third place finish at the State AA Tournament in Pierre.
In the final six games of the postseason, Pierre never allowed more than
four runs, and held the opposition to just six total earned runs in those
six games. In front of nearly 1,000 people in the state semifinals, Post 8
and Huron battled back-and-forth, with Pierre coming up a run short, a 4-3,
eight inning loss.
Graham Schuetzle, who was eligible to play on the 13-14 Teeners, led the
Split Squad's offense with a .369 average, and team highs with 11 doubles
and two home runs.
The rest of the offensive leaders were 16-year-olds who will have to move up
to Legion or be JV's - Chance Frederick (.340, 9 doubles), Jayson Herra
(.322, four doubles, five triples), Jason Livermont (.317), Will Corcoran
(.299, four triples), Brian Drapeaux (.296, 10 doubles) and Jordan Solberg
(.293, five doubles).
Drapeaux was the staff ace, compiling a 5-6 record despite a solid 3.79
earned run average. He struck out 63 in 80.2 innings, and hurled a complete
game two-hitter in the opening rund of the state tournament.
Dillon Gran went 5-7 with a 4.63 ERA, and Mike Coit, minus one bad inning in
Huron, had an earned run average of close to four. Evan Moore went 4-2 with
a 5.43 ERA, and Evan Fuller made 11 appearances, going 2-6.
Three JV players also put together solid numbers - Zach Edman, whose two-run
double won the Stephens Tournament in June, hit .424, and Jason Mangan and
Doyle Holden each hit .340.

Stephens Memorial Tournament Runners Up
The Pierre Post 8 A Teeners won
five of their six postseason games to take home the Region 4AA title and third
place at the State 15-16 VFW Teener Tournament.
A squad made up of five players who had not played a state tournament game and
11 who had moved up from the 13-14 state champions of 2004, the inexperienced
squad suffered many setbacks in the early season.
At one point, the A Teeners and Split Squad lost seven straight games, dropping
them to 9-16 overall. After that, Post 8 won 26 of their final 40 games,
including the postseason run.
Catcher Matt Farris led the squad with a .455 batting average, but did not play
in the postseason due to a knee injury.
Sam Koenecke (.370), Kyle Cichos (.348), Michael Gardner (.341), Jordan
Heckenlaible (.329) and Jordan Shangreaux (.318) were the squad's leading
hitters and chipped in during the postseason run without Farris.
Short stop Alex Lauseng only hit .220, but ended the year with a .915 fielding
percentage, leaving him among the best in the state as a defensive short stop.
Cichos (5-1, 2.48 ERA), Lauseng (6-3, 2.96) and Gardner (4-4, 3.69) pitched
Pierre to the wins in the postseason, and all three will be looked upon to build
the Legion pitching staff in 2005.
Third baseman Sean Melmer (.276) and Nick Marso (.263), second baseman Jordan
LaBrie (.263) and outfielder Joey Stahl (.276) are the four mainstays from the
squad that no longer have Teener eligibility.
Most of the rest of the squad will join those four in competing for spots on the
Legion squad that returns just five players.

Notes:
4th Place Finish at Region 4AA Tournament
The Pierre Post 8 Split Squad fulfilled its purpose for the Post 8
program, despite a losing record throughout the year. The program gave the lower-tier
legion players a chance to get more playing time, as well as give 15- and 16-year old A
teeners the opportunity to take on tougher competition during the year. The A Teeners, who
played with the legion-aged players to make the Split Squad, then participated in the
15&16 Teener regionals, where they dropped an 8-7 decision to Huron, then lost out in
a 9-5 contest to the Watertown White Sox. While the Split Squad and A Teeners suffered
through a tough season, they have hopes for a better 2005 with some of the youth of the
program coming up. |
