TOUGH SCHEDULE AWAITS SPLIT SQUAD
(April 2) - For the Pierre Post 8 Split Squad, the 2007 schedule poses arguably the toughest of any Pierre Split Squad team that has come before, and one of the most difficult among the state's AA Teener teams.
The Post 8 Split Squad will face a 56-game schedule, taking on JV or A Teener teams from 12 of the top baseball programs in the state, including the annual eight-game series with the Rapid City Post 22 Bullets.
Pierre will host the sixth annual Kris Stephens Memorial Tournament June 16-17. Spearfish and Mitchell will participate in the event, with the rest of the field to be announced at a later date.
This year's postseason schedule has been moved a week ahead of past years. The Region 4AA tournament will be August 3-5 at Aberdeen's Fossum Field. Should Post 8 finish in the top two, it would advance to the State AA Tournament, slated for August 10-12 at the Harmondon Complex in Sioux Falls.
The Post 8 Split Squad itself, featuring Legion-aged players along with select A Teeners, will play 20 games against west-River squads. The A Teeners will play against east-River teams, and every game from July 16th on.
Post 8's Split Squad will open the year on the road, playing at Spearfish and Rapid City Post 320 on successive days in May.
One date that is circled on the A's slate is June 3, when the 2006 state champion Huron A Teeners return to the site of their championship. Huron defeated Post 8 4-3 in eight innings in the semifinals last year.
Two difficult three-day trips are set for the team in June. First, the Split Squad will play in the Top Hitter Tournament, hosted by Rapid City Post 22, June 8-10. Then June 20-22 will see the A Teeners head to the southeast corner of the state, playing Sioux Falls East and West and Brandon Valley in successive days.
Tyler Merriam is back for his fifth year as a coach in the program, his third guiding the Split Squad. His teams have put together a 114-82 record, including a 13-14 state championship in 2004 and back-to-back third place finishes at the 15-16 teener level. Merriam's teams are 16-6 in postseason play, 4-3 a year ago.
The Post 8 Split Squad went 26-34 last year, taking third at state after placing second in the Region 4AA tournament.
